MONEY SAVING: Martin Lewis has revealed how you can get money on flight delays

If youre caught up in delays or cancellations, you can be entitled to a huge refund.

Martin Lewis, founder of moneysavingexpert, often shares tips which firms are the best to complain to.

The 46-year-old has revealed on his website how you can be owed £530 in flight delay compensation.

According to the EU rule 261/2004 you are often entitled to between £110 and £530 in compensation and its possible to claim this for free.

Passengers who have been delayed have been fighting to get that compensation.

Martin launched a free online reclaim tool to make the process of earning money back a lot easier.

However not every airline offers refunds and some companies have tried to block people for claiming flights that were over two years old.

2. You can claim back to 2012

Flight delay solicitors Bott & Co believe any airline will refuse your claim if it is longer than six years ago.

3. It must be the airlines fault

You are only entitled to the compensation if the delay had something to do with the airlines control.

This means if there was a staffing problem or under-booking, you can be entitled to money.

4. Delays must be three hours-plus

How long the delay is could determine how much money you could be owed, but it must be more than three hours.

If you're on a flight that takes off four hours late but lands 2 hours 55 minutes late, you're not over the three-hour delay needed to be eligible for compensation.

5. You're entitled to a refund or a new flight, no matter the reason for cancellation

When a flight is cancelled, you have the right to choose between:

  • EITHER: A refund for the flight that was cancelled
  • OR: An alternative flight (airlines call this re-routing) to your destination
