Twelve people including one child have been killed in the ‘worst fire tragedy New York City has seen’.
At least four others are fighting for their lives after the inferno ripped through an apartment block in the Bronx at around 7pm.

NYC Mayor Bill de Blasio said: ‘Based on the info now, I’m sorry to report 12 New Yorkers are dead, including one child. Four people are critically injured, fighting for their lives, and there are other serious injuries as well.
‘This is the worst fire tragedy we have seen in this city — it will rank as one of the worst losses in a fire in many years.
‘Because of FDNY’s quick response, at least 12 people were rescued.’
More than 160 firefighters are at the scene.
FDNY commissioner Daniel Nigro said ‘in a department that’s certainly no stranger to tragedy, we’re shocked at this’.
He explained that the fire started on the first floor and quickly spread upstairs. People died on various floors. The victims range in ages from one to over 50.
Nigro added: ‘This tragedy is, without question, historic in its magnitude. Our hearts go out to every family who lost a loved one here and everyone fighting for their lives.’
