Labour MP Clive Lewis has returned to Labour’s front bench weeks after being cleared of groping a woman at the party’s annual conference.

The Norwich South MP, who quit the shadow cabinet last year after opposing Labour’s Brexit stance, has been appointed shadow minister for the Treasury.

Mr Lewis was last month cleared after the party’s sexual harassment panel found insufficient evidence to proceed with a case against him.

He had been accused of squeezing a woman’s bottom while giving her a hug at the event in Brighton in September.

The woman, a party delegate, claimed that London-born Mr Lewis touched her when they were introduced at the World Transformed event.

She made the complaint as Westminster was hit by a sex scandal which included claims about numerous MPs and ministers from both Labour and the Conservative Party.

The former Territorial Army infantry officer denied the allegation and said he was ‘very pleased to be able to put this behind me and move on’ after he was cleared.

The MP, who previously served as shadow business secretary and shadow defence secretary, is among a raft of new junior ministers announced by Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn.

After being cleared he said: ‘I believe it right and proper the Labour Party takes all allegations of bullying, harassment and sexual misconduct seriously.

‘I want to express my gratitude to my wife, friends and constituents who have supported me during recent weeks.

‘I look forward very much to continuing my work in Parliament, fighting for the people I represent and the city I love.’
