A selfie helped convict a woman who killed her best friend – because it showed her wearing the belt she used to carry out the attack.

When is Shrove Tuesday and why is it called Shrove Tuesday?

Brittney Gargol, 18, was strangled to death by Cheyenne Rose Antoine, 21, in Saskatoon, Canada, in March 2015.

The teenager’s body was found dumped by a road shortly after, with a belt discovered nearby.

Just six hours before the body was discovered, a picture of Gargol and Antoine, her best friend, had been posted to Facebook.

The photo shows Antoine wearing a belt that matched the one found near the body.

Antoine has now been found guilty of manslaughter thanks to the image of the pair together.

She had initially told police they had been out drinking before Gargol’s death but that she had gone home with an unknown man at the end of the night and she didn’t know what happened to her.

She even posted fake messages on Gargol’s Facebook, saying ‘Where are you? Haven’t heard from you. Hope you made it home safe’, in an alleged attempt to hide her tracks.

But it was later discovered by police that Antoine had drunkenly confessed to the killing, according to CBC.

The 21-year-old admitted that the pair had gotten into an argument but said she did not remember killing Gargol.

She pleaded guilty to manslaughter and was sentenced to seven years in prison on Monday.

In a statement released by her legal representative, Antoine said: ‘I will never forgive myself.

‘Nothing I say or do will ever bring her back. I am very, very sorry…It shouldn’t have ever happened.’
