YouTube prankster Arya Mosallah has been criticized for a prank where he threw water at people in public amid an acid attack epidemic in Britain.
Mosallah uploaded videos of him “throwing water in people’s faces,” for his YouTube channel ItzArya.
According to the Independent, “Several acid attacks in the capital have involved perpetrators using plastic bottles to spray corrosive substances in their victim’s faces,” prompting users to complain about the video.
“With the increasing number of acid attacks on the streets of London, this video is anything but funny,” posted one user in the comments, while another added, “I would be terrified and think it was acid, especially walking around London, acid attacks are becoming more common I really don’t think it’s an idea people should be promoting and mocking, shame.”
“People increasingly worried about acid attacks, and this guy is throwing liquid in complete strangers faces. Not funny in the slightest,” another user complained.
The video has since been removed by YouTube for violating terms of service.
In a statement, a spokesman for the Metropolitan Police encouraged “anyone who has been a victim of crime – through a prank or otherwise – to contact police on 101 or 999 in an emergency,” pointing out that spreading “fear, alarm or distress to members of the public” is an offense.
In August, a burns surgeon claimed acid attacks in the UK have now reached epidemic levels, while in December, a former Labour minister admitted acid attacks have created “no go zones” in Britain.
Statistics revealed by the Metropolitan Police show acid attack crimes increased by 186 percent between 2002 and 2016, as Britain now serves as an acid attack capital with over 800 recorded incidents per year.
