Sarra Reid was shocked when she opened the door to her house to see her young son Liam standing there in tears.

The toddler had managed to walk the half mile distance from his Barassie early years nursery in Ayrshire, Scotland to his home.

Horrified, Sarra returned straight to the nursery thinking staff members would be in a panic trying to find him, but then realised they had no idea he had been missing.

She told the Daily Record: ‘It is about half-a-mile, or a 10-minute walk. It is a really busy road.

‘There are buses, lorries and I don’t really want to think what could have happened

‘He only had a pair of joggies and a T-shirt on. There was no teacher with him and he told me he wanted to come home.’

Nursery staff believe Liam had walked through two sets of doors and an unlocked gate at the front of the nursery.

Following a meeting with nursery chiefs, the nursery has now made the door alarmed and put a padlock on the gate as well as stationing an extra member of staff near the door.

Metro.co.uk has contacted Barassie early years nursery for comment.
