On 31st January, the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge attended a glamorous dinner on their very first night in Sweden, as part of their royal tour of the area.
The royal couple were joined by the Swedish royal family, including Crown Princess Victoria, fellow heads of state, the Swedish Prime Minister – and Swedish actress, Alicia Vikander.
Catherine dressed in a stunning mustard Erdem dress for the occasion, but there was a hidden meaning behind one of her chosen accessories for the night.
Keen royal watchers noticed that the Duchess’ glittering earrings and her chosen bracelet were the very same pieces of jewellery that the late Princess of Wales wore, during her marriage to Prince Charles. Diana’s iconic Collingwood pearl earrings, and her matching triple-strand pearl bracelet finished off Catherine’s glamarous outfit perfectly.
The earrings were a clear favourite of the late Princess’, and she regularly wore them when attending high-profile royal events.
They were actually an early wedding gift from the Prince of Wales from Collingwood jewellers in London. And Diana wore them for the very first time at a banquet a month before her wedding to the royal.
But, most poignantly, she also wore them on the actual wedding day, as part of her ‘going-away’ outfit, before she and Charles departed for their honeymoon.
Interestingly, Diana also wore the earrings for the last time on a now-famous visit to the Serpentine Gallery, the night rumours of her ex-husband Prince Charles’ adultery began to surface.
Catherine has been the recepient of many pieces from the royal jewellery collection, and has actually worn her late mother-in-law’s beloved earrings before.
She first stepped out in them at the Spanish State Banquet, and a week later wore them again at the Passchendale Centenary ceremony in Belgium.
So it seems clear that Catherine is keen to keep her mother-in-law’s memory alive with this sweet but subtle tribute to the late Princess.
Catherine made a brave fashion choice at the royal event on Tuesday night, dressed in a £1,945 Erdem gown.
While the pick proved popular with fashion fans, it left some royal watchers divided, with many criticising the choice for its colour and design.
One Twitter user wrote, “Not my favorite.”, whle another said, “Its vile and colour awful!”
However, some were much more enthusiastic about the design, with one fan on social media writing “The Duchess of Cambridge looks incredible in the Erdem gown. And her hair looks amazing.”
Erdem is a designer the Duchess has turned to frequently over the years, so while the printed, floor-length gown is certainly a bold choice, it’s likely that Catherine felt comfortable in one of her favourite designer’s creations.
