Strictly Come Dancing fans were left stunned recently when it was announced that professional dancing legend Brendan Cole had been dropped from the series.
The decision was made editorially by BBC executives, and Strictly viewers were left devastated over the move.
And it seems one former Strictly judge, Arlene Phillips, has also been felt disappointed by the decision, criticising judges Shirley Ballas and Bruno Tonioli in reference to an argument that took place between them and Brendan.
Arlene appeared less than pleased with Shirley’s critique of Brendan and Charlotte Hawkins’s Tango on the last series of the show.
During the feedback, Shirley mentioned Brendan’s improper use of rise and fall, which Brendan furiously hit back at, denying. Bruno then jumped in, suggesting that Brendan be “more respectful” to Shirley.
Speaking live on Good Morning Britain, Arlene discussed the disagreement, suggesting it should have been handled differently.
When presenter Susanna Reid asked whether Brendan’s response was “too much for Shirley”, Arlene responded, “Oh, I think that was mild.”
She called out the judges for their reaction, saying, “And Bruno jumping in saying ‘That’s not respectful.’ What are they, headmasters and a kid in the school?
“For goodness sake, it’s a professional and celebrity entertainment show. I don’t think that Bruno should have jumped in.”
Piers Morgan echoed Arlene’s view, telling viewers about a moment when dance experts backed Brendan’s view during the disagreement.
He said, “Charlotte, a lot of dance experts said to you after that [performance] that there was no rise and fall. In other words Brendan Cole was right.”
To which Charlotte agreed, “Yes, there was no rise and fall.”
Arlene echoed the thought, suggesting that Brendan would certainly have known that rule.
“Yes, and quite frankly, everyone knows, and Brendan does, that that’s one of the things in the tango. You wouldn’t even put it in.”
