The bottom fell out of some Snapchatters’ worlds this week when a controversial new update came to the UK.
But they are not taking the cataclysmic changes lying down.
More than 30 petitions have been launched on Change.org calling on Snapchat to offer an ‘un update‘ to reverse the upgrade.
The new Snapchat lets people to swipe right to see friends’ stories and snaps, rather than left – a change which has proved so profound that it made people feel ‘attacked‘.
You can find out everything about the update that’s ‘ruined February’ by clicking here.
Joshunda Sanders, Direction of Communications at the petition site Change.org, told Metro: ‘As the people who come to our platform like to remind us, there are a lot of very serious things happening in the world, and apparently one of them is that the new Snapchat update has made many people very unhappy.
‘In the last day, there have been more than 30 petitions started in protest of the new Snapchat update, some of which you can find on this page.’
Most fans addressed their petitions to Snapchat boss Evan Spiegel. One was so aggrieved that they aimed their appeal to the Human Rights Campaign.
This is a group which describes itself as ‘America’s largest civil rights organisation working to achieve lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer equality‘.
At the time of writing, it has not spoken out about the devastation brought about by the Snapchat upgrade.
Neither has the British Equality and Human Rights Commission, which would be in charge of any investigation to decide whether Snapchat has breached the human rights of its users by changing the way they say stories.
More than 22,000 people have signed a petition called ‘Get the Old Snapchat Update Back!!’.
A further 5,000 have put their weight behind a campaign to ‘Make Snapchat Great Again’.
The credibility of one petition was also slightly undermined by the fact that one person who signed it was called ‘Blob Face’ and lived in Kettering.
We searched on 192.com and couldn’t find a single person called Blob Face in the whole of the UK.
The person who started one of the petitions wrote: ‘The new Snapchat update is so aggravating. Tons of people loathe it, and I’m one of them. It’s so annoying that you can’t see who screenshots YOUR story. People can share, once again, YOUR story? Oh, I don’t think so, you better check yourself before you wreck yourself.’
Other Change.org petitioners called the new software ‘messy, ugly and hard to navigate’.
One of them raged: ‘With this update, the numbers for streaks are very small.. making it hard to read. The stories section is also gone, and you will now need to search or tap a profile to view stories. FIX SNAPCHAT! REVERT!!!’
Other Change.org campaigners took a measured tone.
‘We’ve gone through drastic changes with Snapchat in the past, but when they introduced the stories that’s when the app skyrocketed,’ a person wrote.
‘With this new update, they removed the third story page. Making it annoying for use and clogging up our inbox feed with the stories.
‘We are all trying to understand the update, when we as users are actually upset about something we usually just try and adapt to that change. It makes me not want to use the app.’
The people who left comments were more succinct in their criticism.
‘The update is ass and I want to cry,’ one wrote
‘The new Snapchat is complete and utter shit,’ another raged.
‘I don’t like the new update. It gives me bad anxiety,’ a tortured soul confessed.
