AIR DESPAIR: The chances of crashing are highly unlikely, but landing causes the most accidents
If you’re afraid of flying, you’ve probably obsessed over different aspects of air travel.
Whether it’s worrying about the tiny holes in the windows, or the unlikely risk of the doors swinging open mid-flight, it can be a scary process.
Thankfully, accidents are extremely rare as you only have a one in 11 million chance of crashing.

While looking into the potential dangers of air travel, Boeing pinpointed flights’ riskiest moments.
Researchers compiled the results after analysing data from international commercial flights between 2007 and 2016.
Even though final descent takes up a tiny proportion of the travel time, around 4% on average, accidents tend to occur then.

Almost half (48%) of fatal incidents take place when the craft is landing.
Take-off is another tricky time for pilots, accounting for 13% of major accidents.
Only 11% of deadly crashes happened when the plane was cruising.
