FLIGHT PLAN: Will you be trying this ahead of your next holiday?

A travel-loving author has revealed her secret trick for guaranteeing a flight upgrade.

Tilly Bagshawe, a British writer, admitted that getting in touch with the right department is all you need to secure better seats on your next flight.

The frequent flyer, who uses around 100,000 miles a year, claims that requesting a chat with “revenue management” is all it takes.

Travel belfies

Travel belfies are spreading across Instagram.

Tilly admitted that she’s yet to fork out for an upper class ticket with her most regularly used airline, Virgin Atlantic.

The 44-year-old told Bloomberg that she puts a call in to the airline to guarantee a first tier spot.

She admitted that she rings up reservations and asks: “Have revenue management released any first-class seats for miles upgrades yet?”

The author added: “When they say no, ask them to check or just be put through to revenue management so you can ask when they will release some, as well as how many seats are left.”

If this doesn’t do the trick, you can continue to bargain with the company in a polite manner.

Tilly recommends responding with something like this: "You have 20 seats unsold? Why aren’t you releasing them?"

Apparently, this is all it takes to bag a first class seat – although your chances are likely to be significantly higher if you’re a loyal customer.

A Virgin Atlantic spokesperson reiterated this to Business Insider, commenting: “Each year we release thousands of reward seats for our Flying Club members and customers can check availability online and through our contact centre.”

There are plenty more tips and tricks that could boost your chances of being upgraded. Travelling at quiet times and arriving early could help.

There are also different reasons why passengers are not considered for better seats.

Last year, we revealed that customers with special dietary requirements may not be eligible for a first class spot as they don't always have the resources to cater for their needs.
