Senator begs Donald Trump to tighten America's 'unbelievably loose gun laws'
Senator Chris Murphy made the impassioned plea at a bipartisan meeting Wednesday

A Senator told Donald Trump to stop focusing on school shooters’ mental health and tighten up gun laws.

Speaking at bipartisan meeting Tuesday, Connecticut Democrat Chris Murphy highlighted how much worse America’s gun violence rate was than other developed nations – and called on Trump to fix it.

He said: ‘I hope we follow the data here, because the data is going to tell you that america has a gun violence rate 20 times that of every other industrialized country in the world

‘But we don’t have a higher mental illness rate, our schools aren’t less safe, we don’t spend less money on law enforcement.

‘What’s different is that we have the loosest, most lax gun laws in the nation, so I’m all for doing everything, but we should fix the metal illness system, because its broke, full stop.

‘The data tells us the one thing that’s different about the United States is our unbelievably loose gun laws, and I hope we follow it.’

Trump, who did not directly address the plea, called the meeting in the wake of the Valentine’s Day massacre at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida that killed 17.

It happened the same day schoolteacher Jesse Randall Davidson, 53, barricaded himself in a classroom at Dalton High School in Georgia and began shooting.

No-one was hurt, but it sparked criticism of Mr Trump’s push for teachers to be given guns to fight off shooters.
