Britain is braced for another day of snow chaos with a red alert still in place and Storm Emma due to hit the country.

The Met Office said that snow showers are expected across most of the UK overnight, with various weather warnings still in place.

A red weather warning – the Met Office’s highest level of alert – remains active for the the central belt of Scotland until 10am, amid warnings of ‘blizzard-like’ conditions.

Heavy snow that could reach a depth of 40cm is forecast across parts of Scotland during the warning, which was issued as there is a danger to life.

The Met Office definition of a red warning is that ‘you should take action now to keep yourself and others safe from the impact of the weather’.

The snow is set to team up with strong winds and very low temperatures as a result of Storm Emma’s arrival from mainland Europe.

The storm, named by the Met Service in Portugal, is predicted to bring blizzards and high winds to the UK as it collides with the Beast from the East.

Drivers and pedestrians have been warned that roads may be blocked by deep snow, while delays and cancellations on public transport are expected again.

An amber warning for snow is in place across central, eastern and northern parts of Britain until 6pm on Thursday.

Most of the rest of the country is covered by yellow warnings.

Forecasters have also warned of the possibility of freezing rain – which turns to ice as soon as it hits the ground and can make roads and pavements even more dangerous.

Motorists have been advised to avoid driving if possible due to poor visibility and treacherous conditions, and pedestrians have been warned to take care on the pavements.

Public Health England has urged people to plan ahead to ensure they have enough food and medicine at home.

The snow and freezing temperatures are likely to continue through the rest of the week, with a yellow warning for snow and ice covering most of the country until 11.55pm on Saturday.
