1. Uruguay: Montevideo Carnival, January-February
Montevideo Carnival lasts for over 40 days, so you have plenty of opportunity to take part in it every year.
One of the highlights of the annual festival is the Llamadas parade – a street fiesta with traditional Afro-Uruguayan roots.
It also celebrates the abolition of slavery and the culture of Africans who were forced to move to the city in the 18th century.
While many associate carnivals with Brazil, Uruguay’s is equally vibrant and exciting.

The annual occasion precedes Lent, beginning on the Friday before and ending on Ash Wednesday.
You can expect to test out your best Samba moves as the Latin parade commences.
Not only are there classy balls where you can dress up in costume, there are also wild street parties, known as blocos.

3. Australia: Sydney Mardi Gras, March
Half a million revellers took to the streets of Sydney in celebration last week.
The annual parade is a celebration of LGBT rights.
You will get to see hundreds of rainbow-coloured floats hitting the streets, closely followed by scantily clad men and women.
Street dancing, flag waving and motorbike riding are among the sights you can expect to take in during your visit.

4. USA: Spring Break, March
As students celebrate the end of term time, festivities erupt across the USA.
New Orleans and Florida are among the states that mark Mardi Gras with lots of booze and bikini frolicking.
This year, revellers gathered on South Padre Beach in Texas for a legendary party.

5. Notting Hill Carnival, August
You don’t even have to travel abroad to get a taste of some of the best carnival culture in the word.
Notting Hill Carnival has taken place in London since 1966.
To get a slice of the action, travel down to the capital for two days every August.
Expect to see steel bands, street dancers and a lot of drunk fun.
