The incredible clip has left viewers stunned after researchers used state-of-the-art technology and engineering to send a submarine more than a kilometre under the surface of the frozen ocean.

Filmed in partnership with TV company Alucia Productions, some of the footage was premiered on recent BBC Earth series Blue Planet II, narrated by Sir David Attenborough.

“It’s like travelling back in time,” scientist and deep-sea explorer Jon Copley explains.

OTHERWORLDLY: Dozens of strange creatures roam around on the ocean floor

“It’s the invertebrates, the animals without a backbone, that dominate – and they dominate as predators.

“That is how the oceans were more than 250 million years ago.”

Thousands have seen the jaw-dropping video since it was posted on YouTube – and it has left viewers hungry for more.

“We're looking for alien life out in the universe? I guess what is happening in our oceans isn't alien enough,” read one comment.
