Arrivals in New Zealand were in for a shock after an airport supermarket sign didn’t offer them the most politically correct greeting.

Visitors to chain Countdown at Auckland Airport were gobsmacked to see the light behind the first letter ‘o’ broke – meaning the store was emblazoned with the word ‘c*ntdown instead.

Diver and spearfisher Catherine Sayce noticed the hilarious error when she visited the shop in Mangere, Auckland, on Saturday night.

The 28-year-old, who lives in Auckland, said: ‘I definitely did a double take when I noticed the sign spelled out a naughty word.

‘I was amazed people seemed to be going about their daily shop and walking in without paying attention to the sign.

‘I don’t normally pay a lot of attention to the lights on supermarket logos – unless of course, they spell out a horrific swear word.

‘Since I put it on social media, everyone has been saying how funny it is.

‘I drove past this morning and there was a man in a cherry picker with the ‘o’.

‘I was surprised they left any of the lights on in the sign when they realised what it spelled.’

The letter o was missing for around three days.

She posted an image of the store on Instagram with the caption: ‘There’s only one place I shop.

‘Also what people yell when I fall over.’

A spokesman for the store told the New Zealand Herald: ‘It just sh-ws y-u can’t live in a w-rld with -ut an O!’
