Teacher’s bottom teeth fell out in front of class after botched surgery

A retired science teacher has described the moment his teeth fell out during class after he received botched mouth surgery.

John Miles, 62, was left embarrassed after his lower bridge dropped out while he was stood in front of his pupils.

He eventually sued his two dentists who had been treating him for 20 years and won a £45,000 pay-out.

‘It was nothing but pain and problems from the point I had the bridge and implants fitted. I had problems for three years with pain, fractures and it becoming loose,’ Mr Miles said.

‘I remember I was teaching my class and all of a sudden an implant just came out in my hand. I held it up to the class.

‘On another occasion, I was eating cereal and I heard a crack and that was my lower bridge breaking. I feel like I was very badly let down.’

Mr Miles had to endure a year without any teeth in his bottom jaw after his Leeds based dentists’ botched treatment led to him developing gum disease and losing bone.

Both of the dentists had not told him about the chronic problems he had with his gums, which led to him losing 12 teeth in total after he had several implants and a bridge fitted.

He added: ‘I had crowns and fillings and every now and then, and I lost the odd tooth – but I didn’t imagine there was any major problem because I was never told there was.

‘I’d clean my teeth morning and night and I’d be asked to go and see the hygienist every now and then, but it was never explained to me why this was needed, or what a hygienist did.’
