Uber has submitted an application for an e-money licence in the Netherlands, where its international headquarters is based, to streamline its payment process.
A spokesperson for the ride-hailing company said the firm is “constantly expanding the range of products we offer and improving the experience for those who use our apps”. The payments processing licence will ensure the firms core products – ride hailing and the UberEats food delivery service – continue to run smoothly.
“The way we handle payments is an important part of that. An e-money licence will enable us to support the continued innovation and growth of our business in Europe by streamlining our payment processes,” the spokesperson said. The company is now searching for a non-executive director to serve on the board of the new Uber Payments unit.
Uber is currently working to regain its licence to operate in London with an appeal hearing set for June.
