American tech giant Apple today announced it is launching a new red version of its iPhone 8. The red phone will be available in both the standard iPhone 8 and iPhone 8 Plus models. Proceeds from the sale of the phone will support Product (RED), an organisation that supports the fight against HIV/AIDS in Africa.

Apple announced a similar version of the iPhone 7 models last year, but unlike last years white-beseled models, the new red iPhone will have a black front panel. The Apple Watch will also be available with a red sports band in support of Product (RED), and the company has also introduced a new red leather cover for the iPhone X model, which will be available beginning tomorrow.
A portion of proceeds from all the red model products will go to the Global Fund HIV/AIDS program. Although Apple did not specify what percentage of proceeds would go to charity, the company says that since beginning its partnership with (RED) in 2006, it has donated more than $160m.

“This special edition iPhone features a stunning red and black colour combination and also offers customers the opportunity to make an impact in fighting the spread of HIV and AIDS,” said Greg Joswiak, Apples vice president of Product Marketing. “We are proud to support (RED) with this bold new iPhone and hope customers think it is as special as we do.”
(RED)'s CEO Deborah Dugan said "Today's announcement is further evidence of Apples leadership in and commitment to the AIDS fight since the beginning of (RED) in 2006. The more than $160 million Apple has donated in the last 11 years today equates to more than 800 million days of lifesaving ARV medication that prevents the transmission of HIV from mothers to their babies.”
Both red iPhone 8 and red iPhone 8 Plus versions will be available in 64GB and 256GB starting at £699. Both special edition models will be available to order in the UK beginning April 10.
