This week, Jennifer Riordan was tragically killed when a Southwest Airlines plane engine failed mid-flight.

The mum-of-two suffered fatal injuries when she was sucked through the window of the aircraft and hit by engine debris.

As oxygen masks hung down from the ceiling, hero pilot Tammie Jo Shults managed to get the rest of her 140 passengers home safely.

Following the heartbreaking incident, aviation experts are begging flyers to start paying attention to the safety briefing given before take-off.

LISTEN UP: Learning this information could save your life

After harrowing photos emerged from the scene, many were shocked to see how other passengers reacted to the disaster.

A snap of distressed looking flyers could be seen with oxygen masks covering their mouths.

But can you see what most of them have done wrong?

Travel expert Bobbie Laurie revealed that many of the holidaymakers had failed to put the life-saving equipment over their noses and mouth.

He tweeted: “People: Listen to your flight attendants!

“Almost everyone in this photo from @SouthwestAir #SWA1380 today is wearing their mask wrong.

“Put down the phone, stop with the selfies… and listen.

“Cover your nose and mouth.”

After Bobbies social media post went viral, flight attendants confessed that a worrying amount of passengers dont pay attention to instructions at the start of the flight.

One air hostess commented: “Ive done the safety demo hundreds of times at work and each time I do it only half of the passengers look up and watch.

“Please people pay attention its very important information.”

Another added: “As a former airline employee, for over 35 years, I find it devastating to see this picture of people wearing a mask the wrong way.

“I am glad you pointed out that people need to put their stupid phones down and pay attention.”
