SCENIC: There are so many things to do in Salzburg, especially take in the sights
Who would have known that having a pint of beer would be acceptable at 10am?
Apparently its completely normal in Salzburg as its apart of the Austrian culture.
In fact, beer has been brewed in the city for more than 600 years and the first commercial breweries were established at the end of the 14th century.
Every morning would typically begin with a nice cold pint of beer. The beer in Salzburg is as light as a feather and luckily it doesnt go straight to your head.

The city is filled with culture, including the iconic steps from The Sound of Music.
As well as the heartwarming film, which stars Julie Andrews, Salzburg is also the home town of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, one of the most respected composers of the 1700s.
But the town is most famous for its beverages and is regarded as the beer capital of Austria with 11 breweries in and around the city.
I visited quite a few of the beer houses during my stay, the Stiegl Brewery, Trumer Brewery and of course the Augustine Brewery.

Trumer makes Pils, Stiegl produces Maureen beer and die WEISSE specialises in wheat beer, so theres something for everyone.
My personal favourite was of course the Stiegl as it was light and very easy to handle before midday.
During my three-day stay I got a feel of Austria and I was lucky enough to experience the culture by catching a glimpse of the Raising of the Maypole.
The tradition is an important custom that dates all the way back to the 17th century and happens every year at the beginning of May.
In the city, there is an annual competition for the best beer restaurant in Salzburg and in the limited time we were there, we were able to witness die WEISSE and Restaurant Fuxn win prestigious prizes.
What are the best things to do in Salzburg?

THINGS TO DO: The town centre has many restaurants, including places to eat Mozarts chocolate
1. Lederhosendonnerstag
If you travel to the city at the start of the month, the Lederhosendonnerstag happens on the first Thursday of every month.
This for me was an evening of good beer, food and loads of dancing (my personal favourite).
At this hipster event, men will wear their Lederhosen and women will dress in Dirndl, traditional Austrian attire.
Everybody gets together for an after-work party in a secret location.
This is something only known to locals, but if youre visiting Salzburg for the first time, youre able to rent the traditional outfits, if you fancy heading to the party.

2. Cycling
Salzburg is famous for being a wonderful place to explore by a bicycle. If you want to soak in the beautiful views, you can rent an E-bike from the city centre and take it anywhere you want.
We cycled through the scenic mountains and spotted a few scenes from The Sound of the Music.
There are numerous bike-rental locations which provide the opportunity to borrow regular bicycles or electric bikes for an extended tour of the city.
If you hold the Salzburg Card or wish to purchase one, you can receive discounts at a number of local bike centres, alternatively you can visit Salzburg.info for more guidance on rentals.

3. Visiting breweries
If this is something you wish to explore in Salzburg, I recommend renting a car with a private driver for the day.
By doing this you can try out all the breweries you want, without worrying about how much you drink.
Some of the best breweries inlcude:
- The Trumer Privatbrauerei: This is a family business, not only famous for its Trumer Pils, but also its patented open fermentation process.
- The Gusswerk Brewery: It was founded in 2006 and specialises in organic beer.
- SKloane Brauhaus: This specialises in wheat beer.
- Landgasthof Allerberger: This brewery is famous for its pale lager, wheat and seasonable beers.
And if youre combining your love of beer with food, be sure to visit Restaurant Fuxn, die WEISSE, Stieglbrauerei zu Salzburg and Beffa Bar, which have all won awards this year.

4. Eating
Food is an important part of the Austrian culture and if youre a lover of meat, you can enjoy some fantastic schnitzel and bratwurst in Salzburg.
My personal favourite was the bratwurst, but if you dont wish to eat anything to heavy (especially if youre going for a cycle afterwards), make sure you try the apple strudel and a warm pretzel with your beer.
Finally, in your time in Salzburg the Mozart Balls or Mozartkugel. These are delicious chocolate balls with pistachio, marzipan and nougat cores.
