TRAVEL CHAOS: Eurostar staff are set to strike during peak holiday season

With children breaking up for summer, the next six weeks is likely to be a very busy period for the travel industry.

But Eurostar passengers could face travel chaos as staff at London St Pancras threaten to stage a 24-hour strike.

Members of the Rail, Maritime and Transport (RMT) union will walk out for 24 hours on July 28.

Workers say the strike is over repeated service failures and breakdowns and “dangerous working conditions”.

The union claims the international terminal that links London with Paris, Brussels and Amsterdam has been reduced to “chaos”.

The strike could cause major disruption for those wanting to travel on the last Saturday of July.

Tourists travelling to Paris and families venturing to Disneyland may be impacted by the strike.

An estimated 140 staff will take place in the travel strike.

Rail Union RMT General Secretary, Mick Cash commented in a statement: “The conditions at St Pancras have been simply appalling in recent weeks with dangerous levels of overcrowding on the concourse as services plunge into meltdown on the cusp of the busiest part of the year.

“RMT will not tolerate a position where our members are left to pick up the pieces due to corporate failures.

“RMT is escalating this dispute with a ballot of train managers and it is now time for Eurostar to get their heads out of the sand, recognise the seriousness of the current situation and come forward with proposals that address the issues our members have been raising with them.”

A Eurostar spokesman said while “disappointed” in the planned strikes, they were “keen to find a solution”.

"If the strike action goes ahead, our plan is to run a normal service so that all passengers booked to travel with Eurostar will be able to do so,” they confirmed.

Extra staff have been brought in over the summer to try and handle peak season.

But this isnt the only strike affecting British holidaymakers this summer.

Ryanair pilots are set to strike on Friday 20 July. The airline said flights between Ireland and the UK will be cancelled due to the strike action.

Luton airport baggage handlers are also going on strike on between 3am on 20 July and 1:59pm on 22 July.

This is the start of many UK school summer holidays and is likely to cause travel disruptions.
