In a Twitter post the bank said: "We are currently experiencing difficulties with Faster payments and apologise for any difficulties this may cause."

Adding: "We are working to fix this and will update you as soon as we can."

Customers tweeted their problems to the banks Twitter account.

CHAPS is also down… supposed to be exchanging contracts on my new house today but can't because of this IT issue… branch and telephone banking have been unable to process my payment all day…. stress I can do without! ?

Customers of Lloyds subsidiary Halifax were also experiencing problems.

Hi, I'm JC. We're aware of an issue with Faster Payments, which is industry wide. This is currently under investigation and will be resolved ASAP. However, at this point we cant confirm a timescale. Apologies for any inconvenience.

Customers of TSB were also hit by IT outages this week as the bank continued to struggle with its systems following the transfer to a new platform.
