TRAVEL WARNING: Experts have warned about crime in Amsterdam's red light district

The Netherlands capital is popular among hen and stag parties.

But now, British tourists have been advised against walking around Amsterdam late at night.

So is the destination safe for holidaymakers?

Dare you travel to the most DANGEROUS holiday destinations in the world?

Foreign climes offer sunshine, sandy beaches and clear blue seas, but criminals in these paradises often prey on the unsuspecting tourist. For many, these beautiful places can become a deadly honey trap. Dare you travel to the most dangerous holiday destinations on earth? Is Amsterdam safe and what have experts said about the location?

Amsterdams ombudsman, Arre Zuurmond, is concerned that “authority no longer exists” in the city.

In a recent interview with Trouw newspaper, he observed that the Red Light District was “lawless” territory.

After placing two CCTV cameras in the area, researchers detected 900 offences in the area.

Worryingly, these included drug dealing, theft and violence.

The ombudsman believes that the rise in tourism and lack of enforcement have allowed these problems to spiral.

Zuurmond said: "Between two and four o'clock at night there is a grim atmosphere that leads to lawlessness.

"There's no action (from police), you can p*** on a van of the mobile unit without the driver saying anything…

"On some evenings there are 300,000 visitors in the Amsterdam centre, but you can (count) how many enforcers there are.”

Brits abroad: Sunburnt revellers hit the town

Magaluf in Mallorca is still 'the' place for drinking tourism. One night provides sunburnt drunken revellers, blood, brawls and policemen.

How can tourists stay safe in Amsterdam?

Gov.uk warns tourists to “be alert to the existence of street crime.”

They also recommend taking out comprehensive travel and medical insurance before flying.

Despite this, holidaymakers arent being advised to swerve the location.

The government website adds: “British nationals make in excess of 2 million visits to the Netherlands every year half of whom are visiting Amsterdam.

“Most visits are trouble-free.”
