Its common for holidaymakers to feel a little worse for wear when stepping off of flights.

As youre sharing an enclosed cabin with other passengers, its easier for contagious illnesses to spread.

So is there a way to combat this common problem?

You may notice that airlines enjoy blasting air conditioning onto passengers.

While this can leave some feeling a bit chilly during the journey, its apparently in place for a very good reason.

The cooling vents have a bad reputation for leaving you feeling dried out, but they do actually help to ward off illnesses.

Dr Mark Gendreau revealed that this is because it cuts your risk of breathing in an airborne illness.

The medical expert explained that the vent creates a “barrier” around the person beneath it, helping to ward of viruses.

He told Travel and Leisure magazine: "As a rule of thumb, the air that youre typically breathing and exposed to is usually anywhere from two to five rows surrounding your seat.

“For airborne viruses, it is incredibly important to ventilate, since ventilation becomes your main means of control besides isolating the affected person."

This isnt the only health concern raised in recent months.

Last week, doctors warned that holidaymakers are catching nits from their plane seats.

Dr Sharon Wong, a British Skin Foundation expert, revealed: "Head lice dont fly or jump as they are wingless.

“Most commonly they infect another person via close contact and survive by blood feed from the scalp.

“However, they can survive off the human host for up to 48 hrs.

"So within that time frame, lice and eggs that have dropped off the hair shaft or hair strands that are infested with lice can potentially be cross transferred to another person by objects such as pillows, hairbrushes… and headrests.”
