The Great British Bake Off returned to our screens last night – but there was one big change that left viewers seriously divided.

Prue Leith on The Great British Bake Off, 28 August 2018

Most of the familiar GBBO elements were in place as 12 new bakers were welcomed into the tent by hosts Sandi Toksvig and Noel Fielding as well as judges Paul Hollywood and Prue Leith.

However, many fans of the show were shocked to see that this years first week was Biscuit Week, despite the programme having always began with Cake Week in the past ever since it first aired on the BBC in 2010.

In fact many were so upset by it all that they took to Twitter to complain about the lack of sponge goods.

“outraged theyve decided to do biscuit week first instead of cake week,” one fan tweeted, whilst another wrote: “Starting with biscuits not cake? WHAT IS THIS MADNESS”

And one added: “What!!!! Biscuits not cake in week 1? Thats it Im done”

Got cakes for cake week on #GBBO….and its Biscuit week?! Youve gone too far Channel 4! Its always cake week on week 1?!?! pic.twitter.com/1UUP2LZeNG

Some fans seemed to praise GBBO for making a bold change, though.

“Biscuit week instead of cake week? How rebellious,” one Twitter user said.

Meanwhile one relieved viewer posted: “I dont have cake but luckily its biscuit week and I HAVE BISCUITS!!”

Phew! Following the dramatic shake-up to the first week, last nights Bake Off saw the contestants attempt to make 24 identical regional biscuits to begin with before taking on the technical challenge of making a Wagon Wheel.

It ended with a tough showstopper round in which the bakers had to create a picture of themselves in a memorable scene – all on a biscuit.

Despite the controversy over Biscuit Week, fans seemed to enjoy the new series opener, with one writing: “#GBBO is back and life is glorious once again”

“My lifes improved dramatically since #gbbo has started again,” a fellow viewer agreed.

And those watchers still missing Cake Week will be very pleased to hear that it will be hitting our screens on next weeks Bake Off.
