Redheads will now be able to accurately reflect their appearance while sending messages as Apple launches a series of new emojis in a bid to make them more inclusive.

The iPhone firm has launched more than 70 new characters, which include grey-haired, curly-haired and bald avatars, along with new animals and icons for sports and food.

A kangaroo and a llama are also included in the update.

The new additions, which were first previewed earlier this year for World Emoji Day, are available now as part of the iOS 12.1 public beta version of Apple's latest software update.

Android users are already able to use redhead emojis as part of version 9.0 Pie on phones such as the Google Pixel.

In a statement, Apple said it was adding its new "beautifully designed" characters to its collection of thousands of icons, which include gender-neutral avatars and mythical creatures.

"Emoji are used by people all over the world to communicate," it said.

"iOS 12.1 brings even more characters to the keyboard that better represent global users, including new emoji for moon cake, red gift envelope and nazar amulet."

Social media users expressed their delight at the "long overdue" additions, with some particularly pleased with the new "puppy eyes" and bagel emojis.

More from Apple

One Twitter user said: "They're finally going to represent the redheads? People will be thrilled, lol."

Another added: "APPLE FINALLY RELEASING A GINGER EMOJI YOOOOO IT'S OUR TIME."
