TV chef Nigella Lawson has shocked fans by admitting that she has had to curb her drinking as it can 'exacerbate her anxiety.
Speaking on the Jessie Wares Table Manners podcast the 58-year-old – who is known for her confident on-screen persona – confessed that while alcohol helped to allay her worries in the first instance, sipping on her favourite tipples soon left her with a horrible tight feeling of worry.
The mum-of-two went on to reveal that she has adjusted her drinking habits and now only has the occasional glass of wine when shes out for dinner.
“Ive never been a big drinker. I do like it. I do try to because sometimes I think if you dont drink, its like, after the first hour of a party youre in a different room to everyone else and that can be quite difficult,” she explained.
“I feel that Im quite an anxious person and drink can really exacerbate that anxiety. It gets rid of it at first, but then afterwards, that horrible tight feeling of worry and just generally just not feeling quite right.
“Kingsley Amis [novelist] always said there are two types of hangover -the physical hangover and the metaphysical hangover, and the metaphysical hangover was worse.”
The hit star of TV series such as Nigella: At My Table and Masterchef Australia also explained how her age may have impacted the way she reacts to alcohol, saying:
“Its just it [drinking alcohol] just does something to me, but I think maybe its an age thing too after a certain age. You know what it is, its being out of practice.
“Last year I went into training a bit because I went to Italy for three days, so the two weeks before that I started having a glass of wine, a bit each week, to go into training to get myself used to it.”
The revelations are in complete contrast to comments made by the Lawson just a few years ago. The self-styled Domestic Goddess was pictured on a night out with her 86-year-old father Nigel, the former Chancellor of the Exchequer, with shots of vodka reportedly lined up on the table back in 2015.
Asked whether she enjoyed the drink by a radio station, she is said to have replied: “Yes, I do. I dont think I can drink as many as him (her father), but yes.”
The broadcaster is also famed for her booze-laden recipes including desserts such as No-Churn Salted Caramel Bourbon Ice Cream and Penne Alla Vodka.
