Its time to update your Bucket List, because Lonely Planet have released their must-visit destinations for 2019.

Every year experts at the worlds leading travel authority reveal a list of the best countries, cities and regions in the world.

This year Sri Lanka has taken the crown as the best country to visit next year, while Copenhagen was dubbed the best city.

If youre looking for something closer to home youll be pleased to hear Scotland has made it into one of the must-vist lists.

The Scotland's Highlands and islands came in at number five is the best regions rankings.

The area of stunning natural beautiful is heralded as “one of the wildest, least inhabited and most scenic parts of Europe”.

Bonny Scotland was also voted the most beautiful country in the world by readers of Rough Guides, earlier this year.

Previously destinations like Cornwall and Devon have topped Brits favourite staycation spots, but Scotland is rising in popularity.

Here are seven reasons you should head north next year:

1. Edinburgh

The glorious city of Edinburgh is perfect for a long weekend or an extended trip.

Explore the Royal Mile, Edinburgh Castle and Royal Yacht Britannia, before heading to some of the city's boutique bars and restaurants.

Edinburgh is especially full of life during its many festivals, so look out for key dates before you book.

2. Isle of Eigg

If you fancy an off-the-beaten track adventure, head to the tranquil Isle of Eigg.

Located 10 miles off the west coast of Scotland it is considered to be one of the most beautiful Hebridean Islands.

With stunning sandy beaches and rolling green hills, it is the perfect retreat from modern life.

3. The Highlands

The Scottish Highlands are a stunning mountainous region encompassing northwest Scotland. Loch Ness is at the centre, overlooked by the ruins of medieval Urquhart Castle and known for mythical monster “Nessie”.

4. Loch Ness

While visiting The Highlands make sure you take a trip to Loch Ness. You might not see the monster, but its an area of outstanding beauty.

5. Ben Nevis

If youre looking for a more adventurous trip, why not tick "climbing Ben Nevis" off of your bucket list.

6. Calgary Bay

A flash of white sand on the west coast of Mull, Calgary Bay, is considered one of the best beaches in Scotland.

The turquoise water is so clear on a sunny day you'll feel like you're in the Caribbean (well, nearly).

7. Glasgow

While Edinburgh is more picturesque, Glasgow is more edgy and arty. The foodie scene in the port city is bustling and you can nab a pint for 75p.

If youre looking for something more exotic, check out Lonely Planets “Best in Travel” selections for 2018. This year the travel experts named Chile the “best travel destination in the world”.

The South America country made it to the top spot thanks to “the impenetrable wilds of Patagonia” and the vibrant capital of Santiago.
