Coronation Street actress Jennie McAlpine has given birth to a daughter and named her after an iconic character from the ITV soap.

The 34-year-old actress – who is already mother to son Albert with her husband Chris Farr – previously revealed she may name the child after a Corrie character.

And she has, as shes named her daughter Hilda after battleaxe Hilda Ogden, played by Jean Alexander from 1964 to 1987.

Jennie, who has played Fiz Brown in Corrie since 2001, announced the happy news on Twitter on Tuesday evening.

She said: “Our newest addition arrived yesterday. Mummy and Daddy very happy. Big brother very proud of his little sister Hilda. Were all in love.”

Jennie revealed how “excited” she was to give birth when she announced her pregnancy back in July.

She told OK! magazine: “We didnt have a plan last time but I loved every minute of giving birth so Im hoping this time will be the same. I think labour is the most precious thing you can experience with a partner.

“In that moment theres nothing else in the world that matters, its such a special time. I cant wait to give birth.”

She added: “Being a mum is the best thing in the world. Its better than I ever imagined it would be. Now Im a mum I find myself wishing I could live in some kind of parallel universe where I could work and also be at home full time.

“I choose to work because I love my job and it feels like the right thing for us as a family but I do hate missing out on things with Albert.”
