QNA /Doha – As part of its celebration of the 70th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights on December 10 each year, the National Human Rights Committee (NHRC) organised an educational lecture for Qatar Steels employees on the origins and principles of human rights and the role of the NHRC in promoting and disseminating the culture of human rights.

The Director of the NHRC International Co-operation Department, Sheikha Najwa al-Thani, spoke about the historical context of the emergence of human rights, saying it came as a result of the cross-fertilisation between different cultures and civilisations, and it is a continuous struggle for all humanity against injustice and exploitation, wherever it may be.
The director of the NHRC International Co-operation Department outlined the establishment of the NHRC, its objectives, powers and competencies, and its accreditation by the Global Alliance of National Human Rights Institutions with A Status in 2010 for five years and renewed in 2015 for the same period.
She also dealt with co-operation between the NHRC and all human rights international organisations, the most important of which are Amnesty International and Human Rights Watch, in addition to its efforts to raise awareness about human rights and freedoms to consolidate their principles in thought and practice through training courses, media campaigns and publications.
She pointed out that the experience of the NHRC to educate workers about their rights in Qatar is a best practice at the level of national human rights institutions.
Director of the Department of Administrative Affairs of Qatar Steel Mohamed bin Saleh al-Mahdi stressed the companys belief in human rights issues and its keenness that all its employees be fully aware of their rights and duties to include their behaviour in this culture.
On the occasion of the day on which the UN General Assembly adopted the Universal Declaration of Human Rights in 1948, the NHRC will hold numerous awareness and educational activities and events.
