Travelling the world can be expensive, but being in the know can save you bucket loads.

Whether you're hoping to jet off on a exciting city break or a relaxing beach holiday, you'll want to guarantee you're getting the best price possible.

Clearing your search history, setting your browser on incognito and deleting your browsers cookies are all good ways of cutting costs.

However, these techniques alone won't get you the biggest bargain.

New research, from Travel Supermarket, has discovered January is the cheapest month of the year to take a holiday abroad.

The Algarve

In fact, savvy travellers can save up to 67% by going away during the first month of the year.

TravelSupermarket, which searches prices across more than 25 package holiday providers, has found a seven night holiday overseas from just £83 per person in January.

Two-night breaks abroad will set you back just £61 per person during this month. The second cheapest month of the year for a quick hop city break is November, followed by February.

Not only can holidaying out of season save you money, it can also help you escape the gloomy British weather.

Malta, the Costa Brava, the Costa Del Sol, Tunisia and Antalya all come in at under £36 per person per night.

While January holidays to Sicily, Agadir and Cyprus are all less than £40 per person per night.

Emma Coulthurst, travel commentator at the site, said: “People dont think to go away so close after Christmas; low demand means fantastic prices at the start of the year and the lack of queues at the major attractions and the feeling of being one of the locals, rather than a tourist, make up for any cooler temperatures.

"Yes, the weather can be unpredictable in beach resorts but with prices from as little as £83pp including flights and accommodation for seven nights to the Algarve it is worth considering as a sightseeing and foodie get away break."
