There are plenty of rules that passengers have to abide to when getting on the plane.
Its obvious that many of these are in place for the safety of holidaymakers.
But there are some may seem a little unnecessary, such as putting the blinds up during take off and landing.
So why do we have to follow this order during flights?
While it may seem unimportant, there is a good reason why windows should be left uncovered as the plane leaves and arrives at the airport.
Putting the blinds up helps passengers eyes acclimatise to the lighting outside.
This could be crucial if the aircraft is evacuated during an emergency.
Travellers are less likely to struggle to see where they are going as their sight wont take as long to adjust.
It also helps cabin crew to establish whats happening outside.
Aviation Safety Officer, Saran Udayakumar recently revealed more about the rule in a Quora thread.
He explained: “In case of sudden emergencies, every second counts.
“Therefore if shades are open crew can easily see outside conditions to help them in planning the evacuation – which doors to use for evacuation.”
David Robinson, an Aeronautical Industry Professional also provided his expertise.
He wrote: “If you've somewhat acclimatised to low light conditions before an unfortunate incident occurs, you'll have a visual capacity which initially may exceed 1,000 times better compared to if you were suddenly plunged into the darkness and had 90 seconds to disembark from the aircraft”.
