An "extremely disruptive" passenger has been ordered to pay £85,000 by a UK airline after two RAF Typhoon fighter jets had to escort the aircraft back to Stansted.

British low cost airline Jet2.com said Chloe Haines had to be restrained by crew and passengers after she tried to open the doors of the Turkey-bound aircraft during the flight.

Miss Haines, 25, is also banned from Jet2.com for life after she "displayed a catalogue of aggressive, abusive and dangerous behaviour on the aircraft, which included attempting to open the aircraft doors during the flight", Jet2.com said in a statement.

"In their rush to escort the aircraft, the RAF fighter jets created a sonic boom which could be heard for miles around," the airline added.

When the plane arrived back in the UK, airport police boarded and arrested Miss Haines on suspicion of assault and endangering an aircraft.

Steve Heapy, chief executive of Jet2.com and Jet2holidays, said: "Miss Haines's behaviour was one of the most serious cases of disruptive passenger behaviour that we have experienced.
