Despite heatwave, this summer was one of the wettest for 100 years

Temperatures may have broken records in July, but new figures from the Met Office have revealed this summer was also one of the wettest for 100 years.

Despite the heatwave, which saw highs of 38.7C (101.7F) recorded in Cambridge, the UK endured the seventh-wettest summer since 1910.

The Met Office statistics also revealed that Scotland suffered its wettest summer since 1985.

In England, Cheshire had 179% of its average rainfall for the season compared with the average from 1981 to 2010.

Northumberland had 174% of its average rainfall – with Derbyshire, where residents of Whaley Bridge had to be evacuated over fears a dam could collapse, got 173% of its average rainfall.

Meanwhile, the Met Office says the UK's average summer temperatures for 2019 were 0.8C higher than the average between 1981 and 2010.

Tim Legg, of the Met Office's National Climate Information Centre, said: "The picture for each of the three months was different depending on where you were in the UK.Read More – Source
