A former nurse considered taking her own life and told her husband to leave her after losing four limbs to sepsis.

Jayne Carpenter, 51, lost both legs, her left arm and four fingers when she was hit with the infection which developed from a simple cough.

Doctors thought she might have pneumonia until she fell into a coma and told her husband she would die unless she had a quadruple amputation.

But although she has her dark moments Jayne has vowed to walk again and wants to raise £265,000 for a set of artificial limbs.

Jayne said: Its been completely devastating and life changing. Getting sepsis is something you never predict will happen to you.

It turned my world upside down.

I havent let it defeat me but I do get my dark moments.

She said: Id had quite bad cough and was coughing up dark coloured phlegm.

I was getting worse and I just thought it was a virus.

The following day I woke up and felt short of breath and couldnt walk anywhere.

I thought it was a cough, as a nurse I thought it was something fairly trivial so didnt want to make a fuss.

When she saw her GP Jayne was advised to go to A&E, but doctors didnt suspect it would be deadly sepsis.

After nine weeks of fighting for her she had to have her limbs removed, leaving her feeling suicidal and grieving for the body she once had.

Although she was told she was lucky to be alive, the former nurse had to change careers and now works part time as a para-legal medical practitioner.

She struggled to cope with her loss of independence and even told her husband Robert he could leave her if he wanted to.

Three years on and Ive really struggled, I thought my life couldnt improve beyond what its like at the moment she said.

There were three points this year where I got close to ending my own life, its been horrendous.

Its like a grieving process, Ive grieved for the life I once had and the ability to do so many of the small things you take for granted such as being able to go for a swim.

I cant put my own jewellery on, I rely on my husband to put my shoes on, it takes away my femininity.

I try and do as much as I can but have to ask Robert to do lots of tRead More – Source
