An application to build a so-called mega prison for 1,440 inmates has been approved by councillors.

Around 3,300 people objected to the Ministry of Justices proposal of building the new category C prison – which will stand next to already existing category A Full Sutton prison, in East Yorkshire.

But today councillors on the East Riding of Yorkshire Councils planning committee voted eight to four in favour of approval.

The government believes the new prison will create more than 700 jobs in the area.

Earlier a large number of demonstrators had stood outside County Hall in protest of the plans.

The campaigners say the prison will have a massive and negative effect on transport and other services, and will also create a crime risk.

Protester Colin Clarke, 70, said he believed the prison would spoil the village and make it a less desirable place to live.

He continued: The traffic impact of having more than 500 staff working there, and visitors, is going to impact on the local road network.

Its really a terrible situation, and thats the basis of objecting to it.

HMP Full Sutton facility currently has a capacity for about 500 male inmates.
