The body of a man, believed to be in his 70s, has been found in a Wimbledon park.

Members of the public out for their daily exercise in Cannizaro Park on Bank Holiday Monday (April 13) spotted a large police presence by the pond in the morning.

Pictures shared on social media show police cars blocking off parts of the park with a large cordon set up around the pond.

Metropolitan Police officers recovered the body shortly after 9am and the man was pronounced dead at the scene.

A spokesperson for the Met Police said: “Police were called at 9.19am ( on Monday, April 13) to Cannizaro Park after a body was seen in a pond.

“Officers attended with London Ambulance Service.

“The body of a man, believed to be aged in his 70s, was recovered from the water. CPR was administered but the man was pronounced dead at the scene.

“Officers believe they know the man’s identity and have informed next of kin.

“Enquiries into the circumstances continue but at this stage the incident is not being treated as suspicious.”

Members of the public using the park shared their concern on social media.

Twitter user @chrismfish1 said “something [was] seriously amiss” in the park posting a picture of a police car and @LeedsPadge responded by tweeting the “whole of the duck pond [was] closed off” and they “saw police guarding the edge by Rose Garden”.

Philip Graham (@flyingwomble) tweeted to add he saw at least four police cars in the area at about 10am, plus an ambulance and a “couple of rapid response vehicles”.
