A YOUNG man has died after being shot in broad daylight in Islington, north London this afternoon.

Witnesses say the man was shot after a moped rider opened fire on the victim. Emergency service vehicles rushed to the scene, including dozens of police officers and the London Ambulance Service. The area is currently cordoned off by police.

A Metropolitan Police statement confirmed the fatal shooting took place at aabout 3.20pm, on Roman Way in Islington.

They said the victim was in his early 20s and died at the scene.

His next of kin have been informed and no arrests have yet been made.

The statement read: “Anyone who witnessed the incident, or who has video or images that could assist police, is asked to call 101 ref CAD 4432/4 July.

“The public have a huge role in helping to both prevent and detect crime.

“We need to hear from anyone who has information about this crime, or about someone they suspect to be carrying a weapon or involved in organised crime.”

Many locals took to Twitter to report the attack, with one person writing: “Young boy I think shot dead by moped rider.”

Another user said: “Starting to hear reports of a young boy shot and killed in Islington London by. A young on a moped.”

One eyewitness told the PA news agency he saw the “shocking” incident from his window.

“I heard around seven shots, ran to window, and a guy on a bike or moped rode off,” he said.

“He was looking back. When I looked to the park, I could see a guy staggering then (he) fell. That was it, then police came.”

A London Ambulance Service spokesperson said: “We were called at 3:21pm to reports of an incident on Atlas Mews, Islington.

“We dispatched an ambulance crew, three medics in fast response cars and an incident response officer to the scene, with the first of our medics arriving in under four minutes. We also dispatched London’s Air Ambulance.

“Sadly, despite the efforts of medics, a man died at the scene.”
