A man has died on a railway line in Hounslow after being involved in a police car chase.

Metropolitan Police officers attempted to stop a vehicle at around 00.05am today (Tuesday, April 20) in Powder Mill Lane, Twickenham.

The driver did not stop and a car chase commenced, with police pursuing the car in the direction of Hounslow.

After a brief chase the man got out of the car and ran onto a railway line near Whitton Road in Hounslow, which runs adjacent to Hounslow station.

He was pronounced dead at 00.22 after the London Ambulance Service attended. The Met Police have not explained exactly how the man died.

His next of kin has been informed and they are being supported by specialist officers.

The incident has caused massive disruption to South Western Railway trains this morning as the train line remained blocked.

A statement on the South Western Railway website read: “We have been informed that emergency services are dealing with an incident between Feltham and Syon Lane. This means that all lines are blocked between these stations.

“Until further notice, services between Feltham and Barnes via Brentford and Hounslow may divert via Twickenham.”

Normal service resumed on this line at around 7.30am.

Several local residents have reported that at least one helicopter was heard hovering over the area in the early hours of this morning, and that the road to the railway station remains closed and behind a police cordon.

The Independent Office for Police Conduct has declared an independent investigation into the incident, and the Met’s Directorate of Professional Standards has also been informed.
