The event aims to raise awareness about landmines and progress toward their eradication. The main goal of the event is to support the efforts to clear landmines and explosive remnants of war and to mark and fence off dangerous areas. The event is going parallel and support the 2030 sustainable Development Agenda Goal 16: Peace and justice and relevant to the UN activities to help establish and develop national mine-action capacities in countries where mines and explosive war remnants constitute a serious threat to the safety, health, and lives of people, or hinders social and economic development at the national and local levels.
The event will highlight the situation of Azerbaijan as a case which is one of the most tragical stories which within we meet the human suffering through death & injury, constraint for reconstruction of infrastructure, impediment to rehabilitation of settlements and IDP/Refugee return, blockage for economic activities such as agricultural production, its complex story that needs coherence and international solidarity, for this purpose the IRDG is holding this conference.
The Institute for Rights & Development – Geneva (IRDG) is deeply concern by the threat to the population posed by explosive remnants of war left on the Azerbaijan territory. Azerbaijan is currently addressing the clearance of remnants of war with all the means at its disposal, but it is also working to address the social inclusion of seven hundred fifty thousand internally displaced people. There will be no possible return for the population until the region has been cleared completely from its remnants of war.
Despite of resources allocated by Azerbaijan, the Mine Action remains severely underfunded to respond to existing needs. Therefore, International community support through fundraising initiatives is essential to address effectively the remnants of war issue in Azerbaijan.
International assistance will help save lives, enable IDPs to return to their homes in safety and dignity, and bring sustainable development to the affected territories and people.
