Lewis Capaldi has become the first Scottish solo artist to get to number one in the US in nearly 40 years.

Someone You Loved knocked Lizzo's Truth Hurts from its number one spot.

The Glasgow-born singer's slow-burning ballad spent six months on the US's main singles chart – the Billboard Hot 100 – before reaching pole position.

The last Scottish solo artist to reach the top of the US charts was back in 1981, with Sheena Easton's Morning Train (Nine To Five).

While other Scottish acts have claimed the top spot since Easton (including Annie Lennox, Rod Stewart and most recently DJ Calvin Harris) they were always part of a group or a featured artist rather than a standalone performer.

Announcing the news, Capaldi shared photos on social media showing his face painted with the Stars and Stripes and wearing a T-shirt emblazoned with the words: "Lewis Capaldi – America's Sweetheart".

He also included an action shot of himself toasting his success Formula 1-style with a bottle of champagne.

Capaldi told Billboard Magazine he feels like he's "the sweetest heart in all of the US of A".

He went on to use a fighting analogy to explain his euphoric mood: "I feel like I'm a wrestler, and I'm just walking out and there's an American flag, and I'm saying, 'USA! USA!'"

He also joked that breaking America would mean he could "pay the rent for the next few months".

The 23-year-old once told fans he would "buy a G wagon, move to LA and get a personal trainer" once he hit a million Instagram followers.
