We’re all pretty worried about going back on the London Underground.
Pictures that have emerged over the last couple of days, since some people were told to go back to work on Wednesday (May 13), show busy Tube carriages where it’s impossible to maintain social distancing.
Transport for London has introduced a number of measures to help try to keep people two metres apart, such as putting labels on platform floors and making people queue to get into stations, and their recent plan is a good one.
TfL has said that some stations will now have a one-way system, or that the general policy of ‘walk on the left’ will be enforced more.
Commuters will also be reminded to maintain social distancing throughout the stations, for example on stairs, escalators and lifts.
An email sent out to passengers by TfL reads: “We are taking measures across our network to enable social distancing of 2 metres where possible. Please wear a face covering. Do not travel if you have any symptoms of the virus.
“You may be asked to wait to enter a station. Some stations will have one-way systems, or you may be asked to walk on the left.
“We are also asking people to maintain social distancing throughout stations, for example on stairs, escalators and in lifts.”
As well as these new systems, TfL has asked that everyone wears a face mask while travelling, follows the government advice on hygiene and will be installing hand sanitiser dispensers in stations in the coming weeks.
It’s hoped that by making all these little changes London’s major transport network will be able to cope when it’s running at a fuller capacity – and most importantly keep staff and commuters safe.
