Lizzo has spoken out after she was criticised for sharing the details of her detox juice cleanse on social media.
On Sunday, the singer shared a series of videos on TikTok and Instagram detailing the 10-day cleanse. However, the 32-year-old was met with a backlash as she documented her journey on the programme, with fans accusing her of endorsing diet culture.
Another wrote: “Whaaat?! No no no! Detoxes don’t work and they definitely do not promote body positivity.”
The singer has now responded to the backlash with another video posted on TikTok, explaining that she’d usually feel “afraid and ashamed” to share details of a diet change online.
“I feel like, as a big girl, people expect if you are doing something for health, you’re doing it for a dramatic weight loss, and that is not the case,” she said.
“In reality, November stressed me the f*** out,” Lizzo continued. “I drank a lot, I ate a lot of spicy things and things that f***ed my stomach up.
“I wanted to reverse it and get back to where I was. I’m so proud of myself. I’m proud of my results.”
The singer added that her sleep has improved, as has her mental wellbeing and the health of her skin.
“I feel and look like a bad b**** – and that’s it,” she added.
“I’m a big girl who did a smoothie detox and I wanted to share it with you guys. And every big girl should do whatever the f*** they want with their bodies.”
Following the video, Lizzo’s fans have rushed to praise and defend her on Twitter.
“The only thing Lizzo promotes is doing whatever the f*** you want to do with your body,” tweeted one person.
“Which is exactly what she did. She wanted to cleanse her system which is what a detox is.”
Another added: “Wait people are mad at@lizzofor dieting? Her message is body positivity, no matter the body.
“I’m a full-sized lady who loves her music and feels empowered regardless if she is on a vegan/smoothie kick. She is a musician who doesn’t just exist to be my role model.”
