Police have arrested 289 people and seized more than 250 weapons in just one week as they continue to fight knife crime in London.

Officers from Operation Sceptre swooped on addresses across the capital, including a property in Croydon where 16 knives were found.

Police also recovered a smoke grenade and more than £50,000 cash from the home, with a further 127 knives being left in a weapons bin in Islington.

The total haul of weapons last week included 265 bladed weapons, six firearms, and 45 other weapons.

Police are currently fighting to curb rampant knife crime in London, which saw 26 teenagers getting murdered last year, 20 of whom were fatally stabbed, the highest number since 2008.

On Tuesday four people were stabbed in less than 24 hours in north London, with two of them dying.

The Met’s Acting Detective Chief Superintendent Sean Yates said: ‘This latest week of Sceptre action involved a strong focus on all three local forces coming together to tackle knife crime.

‘There is an ongoing, concerted effort by officers across the Met to tackle this scourge on our streets.

‘But such proactive action is only part of the solution as enforcement can only get us so far.

‘This is not just a policing issue, we need everyone to join together to tackle knife crime.’
