DISCOVERED: You can see the Door to Hell on Google Maps

If you type in Darvaza Gas Crater on Google Earth and zoom in you will come across the natural wonder dubbed the “Door to Hell”.

Locals gave blazing crater the dramatic name because of its fiery interior, which has been burning since 1971.

The site in the Karakum Desert, Turkmenistan in central Asia, is now a popular tourist attraction,

For years, scientists haven’t been able to understand why the spot has been on fire.

The strangest finds on Google Maps

Since it launched in 2007, Google Street View quickly became known for bizarre scenes from around the globe, whether they were funny photobombing seagulls to more sobering scenes of people carrying weapons A couple are caught having sex on Google Maps Reddit

The giant hole – which is 226ft in diameter and 98ft deep – is one of the largest natural gas fields in the world.

Scientists were searching for oil in the area in 1971 and found the methane reserve, which caused the area to collapse, releasing the gas.

They set the gas alight to make sure the area was safe as they were worried about the effects of the dangerous gas.

The gas has now been burning for a very long time, even though researchers expected it to burn out after a few weeks.

But this isn’t the first time that Google Maps discovered something mysterious.

A gigantic white line spanning half of the world was spotted, sending conspiracy theorists wild. And a ghostly figure of a young girl popped up in the town of Delicias in Mexico.
