STUNNING: Scotland has been voted the most beautiful destination in the world

While venturing abroad can be fun, the faff of getting through security and onto the plane can be stressful to say the least.

This might be the reason 46% of Brits are opting to holiday at home, according to a survey by Hatchbag.

If you’re after stunning scenery, snow-capped mountains, rolling green hills and ancient castles, Scotland might be the destination for you.

Bonny Scotland has been voted the most beautiful country in the world, as voted by the readers of Rough Guides.

Previously destinations like Cornwall and Devon have topped Brits’ favourite holiday hotspots.

But as Scotland tops a poll as the most stunning place on the planet, we reveal seven reasons you should head north this summer.

Top 10 secret British beaches

You would think these gorgeous coastal scenes would be something out of a Caribbean or Mediterranean holiday brochure. But all these beaches are in Blighty, so you won't need to remember your passport to top up the tan…BNPS Pedn Vounder in Cornwall could easily be mistaken for somewhere more tropical than the UK

1. Edinburgh

The glorious city of Edinburgh is perfect for a long weekend or an extended trip.

Explore the Royal Mile, Edinburgh Castle and Royal Yacht Britannia, before heading to some of the city's boutique bars and restaurants.

Edinburgh is especially full of life during its many festivals, so look out for key dates before you book.

2. Isle of Eigg

If you fancy an off-the-beaten track adventure, head to the tranquil Isle of Eigg.

Located 10 miles off the west coast of Scotland it is considered to be one of the most beautiful Hebridean Islands.

With stunning sandy beaches and rolling green hills, it is the perfect retreat from modern life.

The Scottish Highlands are a stunning mountainous region encompassing northwest Scotland. Loch Ness is at the centre, overlooked by the ruins of medieval Urquhart Castle and known for mythical monster “Nessie”.

4. Loch Ness

While visiting The Highlands make sure you take a trip to Loch Ness. You might not see the monster, but it’s an area of outstanding beauty.

If you’re looking for something more exotic, check out Lonely Planet’s “Best in Travel” selections for 2018. This year the travel experts named Chile the “best travel destination in the world”.

The South America country made it to the top spot thanks to “the impenetrable wilds of Patagonia” and the vibrant capital of Santiago.
