A father blamed drinking Oasis and eating red cabbage on his urine changing colour – but he actually had bladder cancer.

Craig Kemp said he first noticed something was wrong when he went to the toilet at work and said it was like ‘weeing Ribena’.

At first, the 38-year-old thought it was because he had red cabbage in his sandwich.

‘I looked online and read that red cabbage can change the colour of your wee so I just thought “oh it must be that”,’ he said.

But then two weeks later, the dad-of-two saw that his urine was discoloured again.

But he dismissed it a second time as he had just downed a red Oasis.

A dad who mistakingly believed his urine had turned red after eating cabbage - actually had bladder cancer. When discolouration happened again three weeks later, the store manager could not blame it on food or drink.

He said: ‘It was really thick blood and that was when I really began to worry and I knew something was wrong.’

After seeing a GP, he was taken for tests and a camera was inserted into his bladder.

Doctors then dealt the devastating blow that they had found a tumour and it was cancerous.

Craig, from Maghull, Merseyside, said: ‘I was in total shock. I wasn’t expecting it at all and immediately thought of what was going to happen to me – will I die? How long have I got? How will I tell my family?’

Craig had an operation to remove the tumour and thankfully, four years on, he remains cancer free.

More than 10,000 people a year are diagnosed with bladder cancer in the UK and over 9,000 with urothelial cancer.

He said: ‘I am very lucky that I was even referred by my GP so I am really grateful to him because the cancer was caught in its early stages.

‘One of the things with bladder cancer is it is one of the most reoccurring cancers and I will have to have check-ups for the rest of my life.

‘It is always in the back of my mind and I do think about it most days but in a funny way it was good for me.’
