The incident is said to have happened on Linthorpe Road in Middlesborough.

The officer self–referred the matter shortly afterwards to his supervisor and the Forces Directorate of Standards and Ethics has been informed.

Inquiries are on-going and it would therefore be inappropriate to comment further at this early stage.

Drivers now face six points and or a £200 fine if they are caught driving while on a mobile phone after tougher laws were introduced last year.

Under existing case law a person may still be driving while the engine is running and the vehicle is stationary.

More: UK

Last week, West Yorkshire Police announced they were investigating an officer who had been filmed allegedly using a mobile phone while at traffic lights.

In the video the officer – who has not been named – appears to be using a device while the van is stopped near Bridge Street, Bradford.

And in July, a senior officer with Cleveland Police was fined £200 after he was filmed using his phone at the wheel.

Superintendent Mark Thornton, ex-head of the Cleveland and Durham Specialist Operations Unit, was also hit with six penalty points after footage of him using a mobile phone while driving emerged.
