Sheridan Smith will soon be on location in Liverpool, shooting a new BBC drama written by Jimmy McGovern – which will tackle the issue of dementia care.

The ever-busy star has signed-up to take part series, which will see her play the role of single mum Jenny raising her two daughters after her husband Dave leaves the family.

In the 90-minute drama, written by Jimmy McGovern, Jenny relies on the help of her widowed mum Mary (played by Alison Steadman) to look after the girls while she is working full-time at a local supermarket in Liverpool. But everything falls apart for Jenny and her sister Claire (played by Little Boy Blues Sinead Keenan) when Mary has a stroke and develops dementia…

(Alison Steadman will be playing Mary)

“A great cast, a wonderful director and a superb co-writer!” says Jimmy McGovern. “Im really looking forward to making this.”

The drama is based on the real-life experiences of co-writer Gillian Juckes.

Piers Wenger, Controller of BBC Drama adds: “Its always an honour to work with Jimmy McGovern, here joining forces with Gillian Juckes on her first script for a television drama. Together they tell a truly remarkable story of one womans battle to get the best care for her mother. The cast, led by the wonderful Sheridan Smith, will portray this poignant story with the warmth and gravitas it deserves.”

It will of course be the first time Alison and Sheridan have starred together on screen since taking part in comedy Gavin & Stacey.

But this isnt Sheridans only project for the year. The 36-year-old is also set to star in upcoming Channel 4 drama Adult Materials, in which shell palay an ageing porn star, who makes her millions in the industry.

She really is a versatile actress! We cant wait to see her next few shows.

Safe begins filming soon and will be shown on BBC 1 at a later date.
